“Backwards in High Heels” was inspired by the true-life story of Ginger Rogers who could dance before she could walk. The show takes place from the young age of 15 through her partnership with Fred Astaire and ending with her making her way to Hollywood and winning an academy award. I went to the show a bit skeptical since Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire were before my time but after the first dance number I was already draw in. The musical is upbeat, full of amazing dance numbers, beautiful songs and a bit of comedy for a quick laugh.
The choreography was remarkable, ranging from the Charleston, ballroom, and tap dancing routine done both on the ground and in bed! The story of Ginger Rogers shows her as playing everything from 'the girl next door' to the modern woman with a mind of her own. She knows she worth more than just being Fred Astaire’s partner and set out to achieve her goal when the odds were against her.
“Backwards In High Heels” achieves its goal of engrossing you in telling the story of Ginger Rogers with all the great music and dancing and is a perfect fit to the Westchester Broadway Theatre; it is their 191st production!
