Giveaway: Review: The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum

A great day of fun for the family

By Tracy Gallagher, Hopewell Junction Macaroni Kid July 2, 2015
If you are adding things to your summer bucket list, The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum in Bridgeport CT is a MUST add! We went this past Saturday (yes in the rain showers) and had a blast. The only children of mine that could not participate are Warren (2) and of course Adyson (6 months). But all the rest were excited to climb and couldn't wait to complete our waivers. There is a smaller section of the park for kids that weigh at least 39lbs to do, but we honestly did not check that out, we will next time. And yes we liked it so much we are already planning another trip this summer. It's less then 1 hour from Carmel and was an easy drive down and back so we may even go a few times this summer.

The Adventure Park is a beautiful 5 acre wooded park which  is broken up into sections, where depending on your age will determine how difficult of courses you can do, kids from the age of 5 and up can climb, of course this all depends on your child and if they can maneuver their clips and do it alone. After a short safety briefing where we leaned to clip up, use the "tweezle" (part of your safety clips), un-clip and connect your zip line clip we were off on your way! It did take doing the clipping and un-clipping a few times before I got the hang of it, and the same for the kids. I was glad we went on a day when it wasn't super busy so we had sometime to figure it out on the course without creating a back up of people.

Nathaniel was a climbing fool, he had my father in law and I all over the pace (my husband stayed with the little ones and then we switched off), and the bigger kids (21,15,12) were off on their own. The courses are well marked with what age can climb that specific course and in my opinion age appropriate. Some course do not need a parent to follow, you can guide from the ground but I personally think that would have been hard especially if you have never gone before. The Adventure Park has a great meeting space right in the middle so if you do separate or have people not climbing you can easily meet back up for a break. Water is provided in the park which was great, one less thing to bring! They do have small snacks you can purchase if you wish, as well as picnic tables if you wish to bring you own.

The pathways within the park are all gravel and were a little hard to navigate with our stroller, and we definitely would not go without other adults if you are bringing more then one child or smaller children. My husband and I just feel there is so much to keep an eye on while you climb that it is better to have one on one. When we go back we will get a sitter for the two little ones so we can both climb and enjoy the park. The good thing is, if you are not climbing you do not need a ticket so you can just watch and observe or take photos. There is staff throughout the park, not as much as we thought there should be especially on the harder courses but they are available for questions or limited help while on the ropes courses.

The Adventure Park and The Discovery Museum is open Spring, Summer and Fall with various times (please see their website) and the do offer night climbs, group climbs and birthday parties! We highly suggest making time to get to the park this summer or even fall. The kids and the kid in you will really enjoy it!
